Sedation Dentistry

For those who suffer from dental anxiety or have difficulty getting numb, sedation dentistry is a great option to enhance comfort and relieve any fear about dental appointments. Sedation is available for all visits, including evaluations. The team at AccuCare Dental Center has been trained and certified to administer various methods of sedation to create a more comfortable experience in reaching your optimal health.

Sedation Options

Inhaled Minimal Sedation (nitrous oxide)

You breathe nitrous oxide – otherwise known as laughing gas – combined with oxygen through a mask that is placed over your nose. The odorless and colorless gas helps you relax. During this mild sedation experience, you can still hear, see, and communicate but will experience a relaxing sense of comfort and well-being. Nitrous oxide begins working very quickly and wears off within seconds after discontinuing. Nitrous oxide with treatment is considered safe for nearly every patient (excluding patients in their first trimester of pregnancy, patients with emphysema, and patients who have had recent ear surgery).

Oral Sedation

Oral sedatives, such as Valium or Triazolam, are available to provide even stronger relaxation. A tablet is taken by mouth the night before the procedure and/or 1 hour prior to the appointment. Due to the level of serenity, a friend or family member must accompany you to the appointment.

• Valium (diazepam) – produces a mild level of sleep and amnesia. There will be little to no memory of the experience.

• Halcion (triazolam) – can relieve anxiety and induce sedation and amnesia before procedures.

Intravenous Sedation

The strongest option for relaxation is intravenous sedation. Medication is directly injected and quickly creates a state of deep sedation. The patient will be extremely relaxed though still able to respond to basic instructions. Many patients sleep through the entire process. There should be no memory of the experience. A friend or family member must accompany the relaxed patient to the appointment.

All of the sedation options provide various levels of relaxation but do not directly offer pain relief. An injection of local anesthetic will be administered in conjunction with the sedation to maximize comfort both during and after the treatment. Please ask the AccuCare Dental team if you would like to learn more on the advantages of sedation.

How it Works

Step 1: Making your first appointment.

This is difficult for many anxious patients, so we try to make this as easy as possible.

Step 2: Welcoming visit.

We gather information regarding your health. We take all necessary x-rays and images and complete a comprehensive exam.

Step 3: Preparing for your sedation visit

We will prescribe you a sedative (if needed) to take the night before your appointment to guarantee a good night’s sleep and a more relaxing dental visit.

Step 4: Arriving for treatment

A responsible companion will bring you to the office. Additional medications will be provided to create the ultimate in relaxation. An experienced sedation team member will monitor you throughout the entire visit.

Step 5: Going home with your new smile

Your companion will take you home and stay with you until you are completely recovered from your sedation medication.

Step 6: The next day

Little to no discomfort or residual effects from the dental visit can be expected, and you will be thrilled at all the compliments you will receive.
